When Husbands Stand Accused, the Post Goes Undelivered, and a Carriage Costs More Than a Townhouse

A Dark and Disquieting Wednesday, With One Electric Carriage

Gentle Reader, this Author had fully intended to begin this Wednesday’s dispatch with something cheerful – a bon mot about the season, perhaps, or a wry observation about the temperature of her morning tea. The news, however, had other designs entirely.

We must open, with all gravity, upon the most harrowing of today’s reports. At the court in the fine city of Norwich, one Mark Cain, aged 45, appeared charged with the murder of his wife, Dr Terry, a general practitioner of 45 years, whose body was discovered at their home in Dersingham – a village that sits, with some irony, upon the Sandringham estate of the Royal Family. A post-mortem noted injuries of the gravest sort. Cain spoke only to confirm his name, age, and address, and was remanded in custody to appear at court on Thursday. The medical practice where Dr Terry served has reopened, its staff silent with grief. This Author has nothing witty to add, and will not pretend otherwise.

From the fine city of Norwich, we turn to the northern county of Manchester, where matters of equally dark character have been placed before the courts. One Sean Peers, 38, of Stockport, has pleaded guilty to the assault by penetration of a woman who had been drugged and rendered unconscious by her own husband – a man who stands accused of inviting no fewer than thirteen other individuals to abuse her at the family home over a period of years. The husband has already pleaded guilty to sixty offences against his wife, and has now admitted further charges. Peers has been granted conditional bail pending sentencing. There are eleven further men due to stand trial. Thirteen. This Author finds the word sufficient condemnation in itself and shall allow the Gentle Reader a moment to absorb it.

To lighter – if not precisely cheerful – territory. The Royal Post Office has announced the cutting of 2,500 head office and administrative positions by the end of 2027, citing competition, falling letter volumes, and the stubborn reluctance of the modern populace to correspond in ink. Frontline postal workers, we are assured, are quite safe. It is only those who toil in offices, shuffling papers and attending meetings about meetings, whose futures hang in pleasant uncertainty. One notes that the Royal Post Office managed to deliver barely 75% of first-class letters on time in the year to March – against a target of 93% – and has been fined by the Office of Communications for its failures. Perhaps with 2,500 fewer administrators, the remaining post might actually arrive.

And now, a dispatch from the world of grand carriages and industrial ambition. The Great Carriage Works of the Midlands has at last unveiled its much-anticipated all-electric Type 01, some two years after a rebranding so controversial it prompted accusations of the dreaded “going woke” from every quarter of Elon’s Lair. The vehicle is, by all accounts, an imposing machine – a four-door Grand Tourer producing approximately 1,000 horsepower, capable of proceeding from standstill to 62 miles per hour in 3.2 seconds, and boasting a range of up to 320 miles. It retails at a minimum of £130,000. One commentator on the Professional Connexions Register described the design as an “unmitigated catastrophe” resembling a hearse. Another compared it to the illegitimate offspring of a Cybertruck and a Bentley Continental. This Author suspects that at £130,000 a conveyance, the purchaser is rather past caring what strangers on the internet think.

Finally, the Verdant Society continues its spirited campaign to ensure that no Wednesday passes without at least one fresh controversy to ponder. The member who proposed their recent conference motion – which declared Zionism to be racism and called for a single Palestinian state encompassing all of historic Palestine – has been revealed in court documents to have offered testimony as a character witness for a man subsequently jailed for forty years in the American Colonies for supporting al-Qaeda. She described him in a 2016 letter to a New York judge as “one of the kindest, honest, most sincere” people she had known. The Verdant Society notes she holds no official position within the party. Sir Polanski, the party’s leader, has meanwhile been banned from entering Israel in response to the motion’s passage. It is a remarkable fortnight for a party that began it discussing the weather and compost.
