The Week in the Ton – 28 September to 4 October

Dearest Gentle Reader,

This Author has survived another week in the Ton, and she is only slightly the worse for it. What a week it has been. If one were to seek a unifying theme among the dispatches laid before you these past seven days, one might settle upon this: the remarkable human talent for announcing triumph precisely at the moment of collapse, and for spending money one does not yet possess on pleasures not yet scheduled.

We began, on Monday, with Phantom Plates, Persian Threats, and a Promise That May Take Decades to Keep – a Prime Minister armed with a vision and a constitutional reluctance to elaborate upon it. By Tuesday, things had grown considerably wetter and warmer simultaneously, as Fires, Floods, and a Frigate Sunk confirmed that this nation’s relationship with inconvenient facts remains as unresolved as ever.

Thursday brought a Governor fretting over speculation, a levy upon vapours, and the quiet grief of a great loss, all gathered in Bubbles, Vapours, and the Children Who Must Learn to Work Before They Can Walk. Friday then arrived without apology, delivering One Hundred and Fourteen Charges, One Coffin Entrance, and a Crypto Heist – because subtlety, it seems, had a prior engagement.

Saturday furnished phantom infants and fifty thousand prison places conjured from thin air, all catalogued in Plots, Phantoms, and Fifty Thousand Promises Nobody Believes. And Sunday – dear, industrious Sunday – closed the week with a nation gleefully surrendering £408 for a festival not yet headlined, at a farm, in twenty months, as recounted in Forty-Two Minutes to Spend £408, and Other Feats of Modern Ingenuity.

The pattern, Gentle Reader, is unmistakable. Governments declare victory over schemes they have quietly buried. Politicians promise what fourteen years of power never produced. And the public, bless them, hands over a small fortune for an experience that exists, at present, only as optimism and a postmark. This Author finds it all perfectly, magnificently human – and intends to keep watching.

Until next week, your most devoted and entirely unsurprised correspondent.
