The Week in the Ton – 30 March to 5 April

Dearest Gentle Reader,

What a most exhausting week it has been. This Author, having reviewed the dispatches from Monday through Sunday, finds herself confronted with a singular and rather alarming pattern: Society appears to be simultaneously unravelling and carrying on with the most extraordinary sangfroid, much like a lady adjusting her bonnet whilst the carriage wheels come off.

The week began, as weeks do, with dismissals, bites, and swindles, progressed through rubbish of both literal and metaphorical varieties, and descended into broadcaster reckonings and extortion most brazen. Wednesday’s unpleasantness gave way to diplomatic hand-wringing and matters perfumed, before Friday introduced steak-stealing, identity-stripping marmalade, and death threats treated as mere trifles.

Saturday delivered firearms abandoned with careless abandon, while Sunday concluded matters with storms, sermons, and American provocateurs threatening the Capital’s peace.

The through-line, dear Reader? Chaos marches forth whilst institutions insist upon biscuits and order. This Author finds it all rather compelling.
