The Week in the Ton – 5 October to 11 October

This dispatch has been perused by 2 discerning readers.

Dearest Gentle Reader,

What a week it has been for those who make it their solemn business to watch the great and the foolish perform for one another. This Author has scarcely had a moment’s rest since Monday delivered its opening salvo of Bombers Flee, a Prince Litigates, and the Tories Discover Ambition – a title which, one must confess, reads less like a news dispatch and rather more like a particularly eventful opera. A prince at war with his own search warrants. A party discovering ambition as though it were a coin found beneath a cushion. We were off to a magnificent start.

The theme of the week, should you require one, is the magnificent persistence of those who simply will not be told. Tuesday gave us a Lego-hoarding fraudster undone by his own collection, in Bombers, Whistleblowers, and a Man Who Stole Lego. Wednesday furnished us with a carriage priced beyond reason and a Green acquaintance of rather colourful company, per When Husbands Stand Accused, the Post Goes Undelivered, and a Carriage Costs More Than a Townhouse. Thursday brought a flag that refused its orders, in A Sailor, a Shopper’s Secrets, and a Very Stubborn Flag – and This Author finds she rather admires the flagpole’s resolve.

Friday elevated evasion to something approaching an art form. A Green Man Hedges, a Spanish Night Goes Unanswered, and Science Rewrites a Young Life presented a political gentleman who missed his own party’s vote and still had the audacity to call himself decisive. The breathlessness induced was not of the admiring variety. Saturday compounded matters with Forbidden Books, Freed Felons, and a Green Who Simply Will Not Go, wherein a constabulary official was undone by the very technology meant to spare him embarrassment. And Sunday, never one to be outdone, delivered Tigers, Taskforces, and a King’s Warning: Britain Cannot Say It Was Not Told, complete with celestial skies and a monarch who has quite run out of patience.

The pattern, Gentle Reader, is this: from prince to politician, from fraudster to flagpole, the week has been a masterclass in magnificent, unrepentant stubbornness. One almost applauds. Almost. Until next week, this Author remains watchful, amused, and entirely unsurprised.
