The Week in the Ton – 16 March to 22 March

Dearest Gentle Reader,

This Author must confess herself quite thoroughly bewildered by the week that has transpired. One ventures to inquire whether the heavens themselves have conspired to test the fortitude of This Author’s constitution, for never has a seven-day span delivered such a relentless cascade of scandal, mishap, and outright absurdity.

The week commenced most ominously with Grief in Canterbury, Scandal at the Inn, and the Curious Case of the Houmous, and matters have scarcely improved since. Indeed, one observes a most vexing pattern emerging: missiles – those dreadful implements of war – have become the week’s most frequent visitor, appearing no fewer than three times within our pages. See Of Dying Wishes Denied, Missiles Mislaid, and a Most Alarming Contagion, followed swiftly by Of Missiles, Missing Duchesses, and Celestial Lights Most Peculiar, and culminating in Missiles, Meningitis, and the Price of a Cucumber.

Between these martial catastrophes, one finds Mortgages Most Monstrous, Machines Most Marvellous, and a Kingdom Quite Divided, whilst Of Rising Flames, Reckless Recordings, and a Most Convenient Amnesia reveals gentlemen undone by their own indiscretions. Even Of Coastal Promenades, Troublesome Hounds, and a Most Inconvenient War cannot escape the week’s madness.

This Author observes that chaos, it seems, does not visit in isolation. It arrives in battalions.
